Once upon a time, the Bengali film industry was famous for
its path breaking parallel cinemas. Legendary directors and actors like
SATYAJIT ROY, HRITTIK GHATAK, UTTAM KUMAR ,SANDHYA ROY, SUCHITRA SEN were
ruling that era. After that period, the flow turned just opposite and the era
of hardcore commercial cinemas stated.
PROSENJIT
dragged and fuelled up this industry over decades only by doing back to back
masala movies. Like ‘Dosor’ ,’Kantatar’ were made in that time but they could not dig
the hole up . Things change when ‘undoubtly the biggest star of Bengali in
recent time’ PROSENJIT came on with ‘Autograph’ (2010). It was such a big
impact then. After that film like ‘Moner
manush’ , ‘BaisheSharbon’ ,‘Aparajata Tumi’, -etc made and we witnessed how
‘Posenjit’ turned into ‘Prosenjit’.
Meanwhile the rise of RAJ CHAKRABARTY along with young bunch
of directors gave a new high to commercial genre. Struggler DEEPAK ADHIKARI
turn into hearthrob DEV after the tremendous success of ‘Challange’, ‘Poran Jai
Joliya Re’ .Tolly stated to emerge as a promising factory of every type of
Movies.
-This is the past of our film Industry in a nutshell. Lets discuss about
the movie of 2013 with the aspect of box office numbers. Because at the end of
the day fillm makers have to count of how many times the cash counter ringed.
Well this year it is quietly heartbreak story for commercial cinemas expect few
exceptions like Khoka 420 ,Rangbazz and boss. Film like Loveria,Rocky,Majnu,Deewana
etc fails to attract movies goers despite having big names, big banners and hit
songs. On the other hand, This year will be written with golden margin in the
history of tollywood for none other than mammoth success of ‘Chander Pahar’,
The Magnum opus among all Bengali cinemas. And
we can’t forget ‘Mishor
Rahashya’, ‘Hawa Badal’ and ‘ Shabda’.
The three major success (e.g khoka 420,Boss,Rangbazz) of
commercial movies are no doubt hugely benefitted by festive season . Khoka 420
was a routine hit from Eskay banner with 1.99cr opening weekend and 6.78cr life
time business . And then we noticed eye popping entry of Reliance Ent in
tollywood with BOSS. Top notch camera work,massy song, tightly written script
and stunning presence of JEET –totally a smooth opening innings from BABA YADAV
as well as the come the Hero also.It did a fabulous 1.86cr opening Weekend. Before
Boss storm –there was no intention to count the figures from the leading
production houses. After that the whole picture changed.
Rangbazz somehow managed to dodge Boss but that with a little
bit margin. But cannot cross its lifetime business.
Kousihik Gangulys ‘Sabda’ – was critically acclaimed as well
as did a handsome business. After that PROSENJIT starrer –‘Mishor Rahoshwya
opened with highly positive reviews and emerged as commercial success despite
of the huge budget. Shrijit Mukherjee, the pathbreaker , succeed to portray our ‘Kakababu’ on the
cellerlerid finely and completely justified to the nostalgia of Sunil Gangopadhay Fans.

Pradip’ fails to impress the critics but somehow emerged as a hit. Anik Dutta couldn’t
overcome the mark set by his previous
Blockbuster ‘Bhuter Bhobisshot’
And the year ended with a styles boom! . Kamaleshwar
Mukherjees ambitious dream project, better to say Shrikant
Mohta and Mahendra Soni’s daring attempt to make a larger than
life movie took almost a year shape up – Our childhood fantasy-Shankar's
journey of a lifetime- the CHANDER PAHAR !! .The
movie came , ran and conqured! With an Everest budget of 15cr, expencive
special effects, costly shooting schedules, .Hollywood quality
camera work of Bodhditya banerjee, savanah grassland,
herd of animals, edgy editing by Rabiranjan,excellent work by
Diector of Photography Somik Halder,steller performance by Gerald Roudolf and
Kamaleshwar Mukherjee’s top class captaincy-Chander Pahar anchored rightly and
hit the right chord ! .All previous records are flooded like nothing. Dev entered into the history. Some
pointed at the pace of the screenplay but it was expected as
the director announced that he was going follow the main novel
with little changes. Bivutibhushan Bandopadhaya was was
rediscovered and reexplored. ABP called it-“sholay of Bengali
films”. We got the very first nail bitting high octane Bengali adventure film .
If we see toward the line up of upcoming film of 2014.There
are lots of surprise! –Jatishwar (now running ) ,Khad,Chatuskone -a really strong
reserve bench! And there’s anther surprise for Jeet fans. ‘A Wednesday’ and ‘Special
26’ –famous Neeraj Panday presenting a totally offbit cinema ‘The Royal Bengal
Tiger’ . This films goanna rock multiplex surely with Abir and Jeets rock solid
performance ! and afer jeet will back again with massy comedy ‘Bacchan’. On another
hand DEV will come with ‘Bunohans’-( a real story based film)
and a massy film name ‘Bindass’ .After that he will be back
with another Mega Budget film, reportedly south Blockbuster Magadheera remake.
